Esteeming The Light
I.
John 9:1-41-Do you want
to see?
A. Some people are
pretending they don’t see, that they don’t know, that they don’t have light
when in fact they do see, they do know, they do have light
1.
16-The
Pharisees are already getting light on this and they are seeing that they are
wrong but they pretend like they don’t see; They are pretending like they don’t
know if Jesus is of God or not
2.
21-23-His
parents see and know that he’s the Christ and they’re acting like they don’t
see because they’re afraid of being kicked out of church
B. Some people don’t want
they light, they don’t want to see the truth
1.
18-They
don’t want to see and they don’t want this to be the truth b/c if it is they
are wrong about Jesus
a. They’re trying to find a
way to cover this miracle and make it like it never happened because if it did
happen and Jesus is of God they are wrong and they don’t want to see it
2.
22-The
Jews don’t want get it right, the want to be right
a. They don’t want Jesus to
be the Christ, they don’t want the truth, they don’t want to see even if it is
the truth they don’t want to see it
3.
27-They
didn’t hear the first time because they don’t want to hear
a. They do see and they do
know, but they are acting like they don’t see b/c they don’t want to see
C. Some people are lying
about what they know and what they see
1.
24-They’re
lying about what they know; they don’t know that Jesus is a sinner
2.
29-They
are lying about what they see and know
a. John 5,7:28-29-Jesus told
them multiple times he was sent by God and they know where he is from
b. Matthew 21:32-They see
more than they are acknowledging
c. John 12:42-We know
Nicodemus believed on him, but many of the chief rulers believed on him and
when they talked about getting Jesus crucified they went along with it and they
sinned because they knew they were wrong; these are people who studied the
scriptures all of their life and they saw Jesus fulfilling prophecy after
prophecy after prophecy and they knew it, but they acted like they didn’t know
3.
30-They’re
acting like they don’t know and they do know
4.
34-God
is giving them light, he’s showing them where they are wrong and they are
seeing it, but they are acting like they don’t see it and instead being honest
about what they see and confessing and forsaking their sin, they’re going to
lie about what they see and try to cover it
a. Are these people seeing?
Yes, but their closing their eyes because they don’t want see
5.
41-If
they were blind if, they didn’t see it wouldn’t be sin to them, but because
they do see it is sin
D. You’ve got to be honest
about what you see and what you know
1.
25-He’s
being honest about what he knows and what he sees
2.
30-31-He’s
being honest about what they all know and see
a. 32-We know this has never
happened before
b. 33-We know if he weren’t
of God he couldn’t do these things
3.
Because
he was honest about what he saw, God gave him more light
a. 35-38-He doesn’t know who
the son of God is and soon as he knows he believes
E. Do you want to see? If you are missing it today do you want
to see it?
1.
If
you asked that to these people they would have said yes we want to see, but
they didn’t want to see because they rejected the light, the truth
2.
It takes humility to
handle the light (because the light will show you that you are wrong)
3.
When
the truth is staring you in the face and you don’t want to see it and you close
your eyes to it the only thing left to believe is a lie and in doing so you are
now deceiving yourself
a. Every person who is
self-deceived saw the truth and rejected it
b. The Pharisees were
deceiving themselves believing the wrong thing
c. When you reject the
light/truth you’ll end up in self-deception believing the wrong thing to be
right
d. EX: The truth is your
husband is not your problem, this _______ is your problem; if you reject that
you’ll believe a lie and deceive yourself and you’ll believe he is your problem
II.
You have to be honest with
yourself about what you see and you got to value the light
A. If you are wrong do you
want to see it? – Not everybody wants to see, not everybody wants the
light
1.
John
3:20-The person who is doing wrong and doesn’t want to change doesn’t want the
light because the light will expose his deeds, correct him, show him his faults
a. 21-The person who does
the truth comes to the light and wants the light so that his deeds may be made
manifest and that’s not because he’s doing everything right, it’s because the
person interested in the truth wants to get it right if they are wrong
B. Many say they want to
see, but in their heart they don’t want to see
1.
John
7:28-29-Jesus told them you know me and you know where I am from
2.
John
8:25-They asked Jesus who he was and he told them, but they didn’t want to see
3.
John
8:42-Jesus told them where he was from, but they didn’t want to see and hear
4.
John
9:29-They said they didn’t know where Jesus was from
5.
Whatever
you don’t want to see you won’t allow yourself to see even if you are looking
right at it
a. John 12:37-They are
looking right at Jesus and seeing the miracles, but they don’t want to say so
they won’t allow themselves to see
C. Matthew 13:15-When people
don’t want to see they will close their eyes
1.
Truth
is coming, light is coming so they can repent and be healed, but they didn’t
want to see it so they closed their eyes
2.
If
they would have opened their eyes and seen and repented he would have healed
them
3.
Some
people the Lord has given them opportunities to see and they’ve closed their
eyes and rejected those opportunities and they will be judged like they had
seen
a. The danger is you will be
judged not just on what you saw, but what you had opportunity to see, but closed
your eyes to
D. Many are not honest about
what they see and know and God has given them light and they do see and know,
but they pretend like they don’t and ignore the light and just go on living
life and that’s the path to destruction
1.
Some
people see, but pretend like they don’t see; They close their eyes and pretend
like they don’t see
a. John 8:42, 9:29-They know
where Jesus is from, but they are pretending like they don’t know
b. Matthew 21:32-In their heart they knew John was of the truth
and was of God, but they closed their eyes and pretended like they didn’t know
and didn’t see and they persecuted John and murdered him and in their heart
they knew this was wrong
2.
It’s
dangerous if you see and know something and yet you choose not to do it and
walk in it
3.
This lying and not being
honest with yourself it’s acting like you don’t know that God said that to you
a. Humility and honesty vs.
Pride and lying---You have to humble yourself and be honest about what you see
even if it makes you look bad
4.
What
has God shown you that you’re not doing? What light has he given you that
you’re not walking in? What do you see that you’re not doing? It’s time to be
honest with yourself
a. EX: He’s shown me to
forgive, He’s shown me to tithe, He’s shown me to be reconciled and I see it
and I haven’t done it
5.
If
you say you haven’t sinned when you have you are deceiving yourself; if you see
that you missed it and say that you haven’t and pretend that you haven’t you
are deceiving yourself-1 John 1:8-9
a. Sin means you have light
and you violated it and if you’ve done that and you say you haven’t sinned and
act like you don’t see it and know it you deceive yourself
b. Self-deception is seeing
it and knowing you see it and pretending like you don’t and trying to tell
yourself you that you don’t
6.
An
honest heart is one that is honest about what it sees and what it knows-Luke
8:15, Psalm 24:4
a. A lying deceitful heart
hears the word, get’s the light and acts like it didn’t hear it and see it
b. This lying, covering
heart will keep you down-Proverbs 28:13
