III.   Because saying the wrong thing is so destructive you need tame the tongue

A.    James 3:7-Your tongue can be tamed and you can say the right things

1.     If we couldn’t control our mouths, God wouldn’t have told us to (Eph 4:27, Mt 12:37, Js 1:19)

2.     James 1:26-You’re tongue is going to have to be held in check, restrained

a.      We don’t want to rudder of that ship just turning anywhere b/c it controls the ship

b.      We don’t want the bit just going anywhere b/c it controls the horse

c.      We don’t want the tongue just going anywhere b/c it control your life

B.     There’s a means by which we can control the tongue and it’s through your heart

1.     There’s something connected to the bit called the reigns (The bit is there and it’s going to determine where the horse goes, but we need control over that bit)

a.      Reins consist of leather straps attached to the outer ends of a bit and extend to the rider's hands. Reins are the means by which a horse rider communicates directional commands to the horse's head. Pulling on the reins can be used to steer or stop the horse. The sides of a horse's mouth are sensitive, so pulling on the reins pulls the bit, which then pulls the horse's head from side to side, which is how the horse is controlled

b.      The bit is there but if u don’t get control of the bit, u won’t control the horse; u got to get your hands on the reins so you can control the bit & in turn the horse

2.     The ship wheel is connected to the rudder (The rudder is going to determine where the ship goes; we need to control the ship wheel to control the rudder)

a.      The wheel of a ship is the method of adjusting the angle of a ship's rudder in order to cause the vessel to change its course

b.      The rudder is there, but if you don’t get control of the ship wheel, you won’t control the ship; you have to get control of the ship wheel so you can control the rudder and in turn the ship

3.     The rudder is important in controlling the ship as is the bit in controlling the horse; but more important is what’s controlling the rudder and the bit?

a.      Absolutely your tongue is important b/c like the rudder of the ship determines where the ship goes, your tongue determines where your life goes, but we have to look at who’s controlling the rudder, the bit, your tongue; we have to get our hands on the reins, the ship wheel & whatever is controlling your mouth

4.     There’s something that determines where the bit goes; there’s something that determines where the rudder goes; there’s something that determines where your mouth goes and if we won’t to tame the tongue we have to control that thing

a.      When I want to control the bit I don’t stick my hands in the horses mouth and grab it; when I want to control the rudder I don’t jump in the water to adjust it

b.      There’s something attached to the tongue so that I can control it with/tame it

C.    Like the reigns control the bit, like the ship wheel controls the rudder, your heart (what’s in it) controls your mouth

1.     Matt 12:34-What has preeminence in your heart, will come out your mouth

a.      Preeminence-Precedence, priority of place (whatever has the most place in your heart (takes up the most space) will com out your mouth

b.      What’s in you the most is what you’ll say

2.     You don’t determine what you say, your heart does (That’s why you said something you didn’t want to say)

a.      James 3:4-The rudder goes wherever the helmsman determines; your heart is the helmsman & your mouth is the rudder & your heart is determining what you say

b.      The bit is controlled by who has the reigns; The rudder is controlled by who has the wheel; Your mouth is controlled by whose words have your heart

3.     The way to be certain that u say the right things is to control what’s in ur heart

a.      What is not in your heart will not come out of your mouth

1)      If it wasn’t in ur heart it couldn’t come out ur mouth

2)      What doesn’t go in can’t come out

b.      You get the wrong words out of your mouth by keeping them out of your heart

1)      What you say with your mouth is not determined in the time of pressure, but it’s determined by what you’ve been putting in on a daily basis

4.     The mouth heart connection is all over the Bible

a.      Ecclesiastes 5:2-Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God:

b.      Proverbs 15:7-The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish doeth not so.

c.      Proverbs 22:11-He that loveth pureness of heart, for the grace of his lips the king shall be his friend.

d.      Proverbs 24:2-For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.

e.      Pr15:14-The heart of him that has understanding seeks knowledge: but the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness

f.       Prov 15:28-The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things

g.      Proverbs 10:20- The tongue of the just is as choice silver: the heart of the wicked is little worth.

h.      Prov 17:20-He that hath a froward heart finds no good: & he that hath a perverse tongue falls into mischief.

i.        Acts 2:26-Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad

j.        Psalm 45:1-My heart is inditing a good matter: I speak of the things which I have made touching the king: my tongue is the pen of a ready writer.

D.    Proverbs 16:23-Your heart is going to teach your lips what to say

1.     Psalm 39:3-We use a bit to control a wild horse, we need a bit to control ur mouth

a.      The bridle in your mouth is going to be what you’ve put in your heart

b.      You have to muzzle your mouth and bridle your tongue with a spirit full of the Word because you’re going to be tempted to say the wrong thing

c.      He didn’t say anything good or bad, but meditated on bad & it got in his heart

d.      Prov 30:32-If you think foolishly lay your hand over your mouth so you don’t say it

2.     Prov 4:23, Mark 4:24-If you want to control your mouth, you most guard your heart

E.     Pressuring the tongue with your heart

1.     I force the bit/rudder 2 do something that’s hard for it to do to control the horse/ship

a.      You’re going to have to force that bit/rudder to do something to get that horse/ship on the right course and you’re going to have to force your mouth to say something get your life on the right course

b.      It’s hard on the rudder at first and it’s plowing water, but that rudder has to go where the ship wheel says & your mouth has to go where your heart syas

2.     The way the reins put pressure on the bit and then the bit puts pressure on the horse to control the horse; the way the ship wheel puts pressure and the rudder and the rudder puts pressure on the ship; is the way your spirit puts pressure on your mouth and your mouth puts pressure on your life to change

IV.   You’re going to be tempted to say the wrong things

A.    Satan’s plan

1.     Satan has to get you to give your eyes, ears, and mind to wrong thing; That is the way to your heart; he has to get it in your heart if you’re going to say it & have it

a.      He’ll use a circumstance or situation to get your attention off the Word

2.     Who controls the bit, controls the horse; who controls the rudder, controls the ship; who controls your mouth, controls your life; whatever is in your heart is controlling your mouth and your life (Matthew 12:34)

a.      You can go somewhere different until you say something different; you won’t say something different until you sow something different

b.      He’s going to speak to plant something in you so you’ll say it

B.     The evil report, the circumstance came to get the Word out of your mouth

1.     Mark 5:22-Jairus was tempted to talk

a.      23-This is his confession of faith

1)      Satan’s whole goal from this point on is to get him to say something else

b.      30-He was tempted when Jesus ministered to the woman; 35-He was tempted when the evil report came; 38-He was tempted when he saw the tumult

a.      Revelation 1:16-The Word is a two-edged sword when it’s in your mouth

6.     No matter how much pressure comes on you, if only the word is in you, then only the word will come out of you

a.      It doesn’t matter how hard you squeeze the ketchup only ketchup is coming out

1.     3-Command these stones be made bread-Do it, Say it

2.     3-Satan’s tempting him to say the wrong thing
